sufjan_stevens_presents_christmas_song_contest_376x300

Sufjan Steven's seems to love the holidays, he has released Christmas albums in the past and this year with help from Dessner's brothers from The National and Richard Reed Perry from The Arcade Fire he has released another Christmas EP. Sufjan does an Christmas EP for his friends each year, so it is yet to be seen if this will see a full release on either iTunes or vinyl. Nonetheless, you can listen the EP via Consequence of Sound HERE.

Summer Fiction: Hold your year end lists for this one

Summer fiction is a side project of singer/songwriter Bill Ricchini. This self titled album was released back on December 1st but I just came across it now. Personally I draw relations to this album from artists such as Matt Costa but you will have to listen to it yourself to make that call.

Below is a track called Throw Your Arms Around Me.

Summer Fiction - Throw Your Arms Around Me

Also you can stream the whole album with this widget here.

In other news... keep your eyes peeled for our year end lists coming your way soon.

Hope the Christmas Holidays are treating you all good!

Pitchforks Top Tracks of 2010

P4K_EOY_B_TopTracks

Well I stayed up late, while I should be sleeping as I have final in the morning. However, I had the luxury of examining Pitchfork "Top 100 Tracks of 2010". I won't discuss the list in-depth or reveal their choice for number 1. But I will say that their choice is all the more reason why what Pitchfork says should be taken with a grain of salt. Although tracks from 2010 greats LCD Soundsystem, Kanye West and Arcade Fire are featured heavily through the list, the lack mention to songs from artists such The Tallest Man On Earth, Sufjan Stevens and liitle in the way of The National poses some questions to be answered. Well I won't harp on them to much, then again they didn't have anything from Animal Collective to fill their list this year...

Anyway, Have a look at Pitchfork's Top 100 Track of 2010 HERE. and form your own opinion.

Admiral Fallow and Robyn

Admiral Fallow

While procrastinating during studying I came across a couple new sounds that you might find interesting. First being a Scottish group that goes by Admiral Fallow, with an interesting sound. They bring strong vocals and a plethora of instrumentals to each track but perhaps not the emotional depth of there Scotland counterparts Frightened Rabbit and We Were Promised Jet Packs. But I enjoyed it nonetheless, have listen below to "Subbuteo" and "Squealing Pigs" by Admiral Fallow.

Admiral Fallow - Squealing Pigs

robyn

Also stumbled across Robyn's Body Talk album. I have heard all the hype from Pitchfork about her work, but damn it all but her tunes are very catchy. The more I listen the more I realize this could one of 2010's best electro/pop albums that isn't littered with annoying cliches. Have a listen to "Dancing On My Own" from Body Talk below.

Jumpin Jack Flash! - Stephen Harper Performs

Prime Minister Stephen Harper rocked out at the Tories' annual Christmas gala, to tunes by The Proclaimers, The Who, the Rolling Stones and the Guess Who.

At a usual political gala one could expect a fairly dry speech from the PM. But Stephen Harpers wife Laureen in her introduction stated that "We agreed that since you’ve all heard him speak plenty of times, we might try a bit of a surprise this year." Mr. Harper took to the stage and showed off his keyboard and singing skills and still found some time for a couple fist pumps during the performance. He had the crowd on their feet and dancing by the end of it. You can check out a couple clips from the video below!

John Legend and The Roots - Arcade Fire Cover (Wake Up)

john-legend-roots

This Mp3 has been floating around for a while now but I feel like it still deserves a post even though it's a couple weeks late. This year John Legend and The Roots released an album and now this cover of the Arcade Fire's, Wake Up . The cover is pretty straight laced and does not try anything too crazy except for the outro with a nice little bluesy feel to it. Anyways the track is posted below and I hope you all enjoy it.

Dan Mangan on NPR World Cafe

Arguably the best that Indie Canadian music has to offer, Dan Mangan recently appeared on NPR's World Cafe. Click HERE to head over to NPR to check out Dan Mangan discussing what it takes to make an album, how he writes about himself and explaining the meaning of some of his tunes, as well as live renditions of "Sold", "Road Regrets" and "Robots". The session also includes an interesting little web extra featuring "Basket", so have a listen and enjoy, I know I did.

Tis the Season of Giving Back: Dark Was The Night Contributes Over One Million Dollars to Charity

These days when you summon a bunch of great artist together to make a collaboration it is rare that the finished product is a good album. 2009's Dark Was The Night, spearheaded by Aaron and Bryce Dessner from The National featuring artists such as Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens, Spoon, Iron & Wine, Feist and Andrew Bird is not only a great album but a great humanitarian effort. Dark Was The Night proceeds have contributed over a million dollars to non-profit charities.

Have a listen to Yeasayer's "Tightrope", The Books with Jose Gonzalez's "Cello Song" and Justin Vernon and Aaron Dessner's "Big Red Machine". If you like what you here, go and BUY this one, either through iTunes, Amazon or your local record store.
